Informing the Lok Sabha on power generation in the country, Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday said that electricity generation in the country has increased by 7.13 per cent in April-July period of currency fiscal fiscal.
"The electricity generation in the country increased to 391,163.27 million units (MUs) during 2016-17 (April-July, 2016) from 365,146.09 MUs during 2015-16 (April-July, 2015), registering a growth of 7.13 per cent," Goyal said.
“Power generation at private sector projects increase 14.95 per cent to 123,885.45 MUs in the first four-month period this fiscal compared with 107,777.67 MUs a year ago,” he added.
Goyal clarified that “as per information received from NTPC, the cost of power as billed to the power utilities from its thermal power stations for the current year 2016-17 (April-June, 2016) has reduced to Rs.3.04 per kWh from Rs.3.19 per kWh during the corresponding period last year.”
“This is mainly on account of rationalisation of freight charges for domestic coal and reduction of imports,” he added.
