Extending Friday&’s jumps amid positive global cues, domestic equity markets closed first trading session of the week with gains.
The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) ended 61 points higher at 28,140 on Monday and the Nifty at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) closed 28 points up at 8,711.
On Friday, the Sensex had closed 364 points higher at 28,078 and the Nifty had closed 132 points up at 8,683.
After opening at 28,181, the Sensex touched 28,226 mark on the positive side while it touched 28,128 mark on the negative side in the intraday trade.
In the broader markets, BSE Midcap index surged 1 per cent while Smallcap index gained 0.7 per cent.
Among the BSE sectoral indices, Oil & Gas index closed with the biggest jump up by 1.5 per cent while IT index closed with a decline of 2.3 per cent.
Top gainers in the Sensex-30 pack: Adani Ports (up 2.6 per cent), HDFC (up 1.7 per cent), Lupin (up 1.5 per cent), Reliance (up 1.3 per cent), and Dr Reddy&’s Labs (up 1.1 per cent).
Top losers in the Sensex-30 pack: Bharti Airtel (down 3.4 per cent), NTPC (down 1.4 per cent), Sun Pharma (down 1.1 per cent), ITC (down 0.6 per cent) and L&T (down 0.5 per cent).
However, the Rupee was trading three paise down at 66.80 against the US Dollar.
