Following weak Asian peers, domestic stock markets closed Tuesday&’s choppy trading session marginally lower.
The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) ended 88 points down at 28,065 and the Nifty at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) closed 30 points lower at 8,643.
After opening at 28,190, the Sensex touched 28,199 mark on the positive side while it touched 27,943 mark on the negative side, in the intraday trade.
However, in the broader markets, BSE Midcap index jumped 0.6 per cent while Smallcap index closed almost flat.
Among the BSE sectoral indices, Metal index closed with the biggest jump up by 1.5 per cent while Teck index closed with a decline of 1.3 per cent.
Top gainers in the Sensex-30 pack: Cipla (up 7.1 per cent), Adani Ports (up 6.7 per cent), Tata Steel (up 1.4 per cent), SBI (up 1.2 per cent), and L&T (up 1.1 per cent).
Top losers in the Sensex-30 pack: Sun Pharma (down 2.4 per cent), Tata Motors (down 1.8 per cent), TCS (down 1.4 per cent), HDFC (down 1.4 per cent) and Wipro (down 1.3 per cent).
Meanwhile, the Rupee was trading six paise higher at 66.83 against the US Dollar.
