India and Tajikistan agreed to enhance economic cooperation, particularly in sustainable water development, besides reaffirming their commitment to promote bilateral relations.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, who is on a two-day official visit to Tajikistan, discussed with Foreign Minister Sirodjidin Muhridin ways to deepen bilateral ties between the two nations.

Gadkari, who is the Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, laid emphasis on enhancing mutual cooperation in the area of sustainable water development. The leaders agreed on the need to give an impetus to the ongoing bilateral cooperation in various fields.

Gadkari is in Dushanbe to represent India at the high level global conference on ‘International Decade for Action: Water for Sustainable Development’.

In a statement, Gadkari’s ministry pointed out that potential for trade in commodities like sugar and milk powder with the central Asian nation may be explored.

He also highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment towards expanding economic cooperation with Tajikistan.

Gadkari also updated Muhridin on the progress of Chabahar Port which India is helping to develop in Iran and said that New Delhi would be willing to share with Tajikistan, Indian expertise in building quality infrastructure.

Muhridin said that India was one of Tajikistan’s reliable political and strategic partners and Dushanbe would like to expand its economic ties with New Delhi.

On Thursday, the Minister visited Tajikistan’s Nurek dam hydel power project – the second tallest man-made dam in the world.

 

“Today visited Nurek dam hydel power project in Tajikistan. It is second tallest man made dam of height 300 mtr.
