Telangana's Mahindra University

Expressing concern following a crackdown by Telangana’s anti-narcotics task force EAGLE, which exposed the involvement of its students in a flourishing drug racket inside its premises, Mahindra University has issued a statement saying they were committed to ensuring a secure, responsible, and disciplined campus environment.

The university also said they have fully cooperated with the ongoing police investigation and provided complete support to law enforcement authorities. At least 50 students are under the scanner after the EAGLE task force arrested four people, including two university students, for procuring and peddling drugs. Mahindra University is one of the premier private universities in Hyderabad.

Dr Yajulu Medury, Vice Chancellor, stated, “We are deeply concerned about the recent developments involving certain students in a city-wide narcotics-related investigation. The University categorically condemns the use, possession, or distribution of narcotics and illicit substances in all forms.”

He also added, “Mahindra University has a zero-tolerance policy towards any actions that contravene the law or jeopardise the safety and well-being of our student community. We reiterate that any individuals found guilty of violating these rules will face strict punitive action as per university regulations and applicable legal provisions.”

The university authorities were also pulled up by EAGLE for not maintaining regular routine checks in its hostels or coming out with an “unequivocal policy against drugs.” It had questioned why surprise medical tests were not conducted on students, wondering how they were brazenly receiving drugs through courier parcels in hostels.

The vice chancellor also assured, “We remain dedicated to maintaining a safe and secure campus where every student can thrive. As an institution of higher learning, we will continue to strengthen our policies and awareness programmes to educate our students about the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of adhering to the law. We urge students to make responsible choices and uphold the values that Mahindra University stands for.”

While two BBA students were found to have procured MDMA on two occasions from a Nigerian, two other students were found peddling ganja and OG weed and receiving digital payments from the users. In recent times, Telangana police have successfully cracked down on a number of higher educational institutions.
