West Bengal gets its first BJP government today, with Suvendu Adhikari sworn in as the new Chief Minister at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata. The ceremony took place five days after the BJP scripted a historic win in the state, securing 207 seats and ending 15 years of Trinamool Congress rule under Mamata Banerjee.
The swearing-in was a major political event, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states, Union ministers, and senior party leaders attending it. Adhikari, who was elected leader of the BJP legislature party, has promised to run the new government through “collective leadership” and focus on corruption-free governance, justice, and public service.
