The youth, who made derogatory comments against chief minister Miss Mamata Banerjee on social media and different private television channels, should tender unconditional apology, said Dr Shashi Panja, Trinamul Congress spokesman and state minister for Women and Child Development and Social Welfare on Saturday.

The minister added that the statement has hit the feelings and sentiments of all women.

Dr Panja continued: “It is a shame that while sitting in Congress office he said he was expressing his personal view. Does the Congress support his views,” she asked.

She said when Smriti Irani had made a snide remark against Sonia Gandhi on the floor of Lok Sabha, all Trinamul MPs stood up and protested.

She said Miss Banerjee has looked after the interests of women by introducing schemes like Lakshmir Bhandar, Kanyashree, Rupashree. Dr Panja said freedom of speech does not allow anyone to make derogatory comments.

“It is most unfortunate that a section of the media is backing Kaustab Bagchi and trying to make him a hero. People are talking big these days, completely forgetting the days of the CPM regime. If anyone used unparliamentary language against Jyoti Basu or any of the senior CPM leaders, next morning people would see his dead body. The West Bengal government honours freedom of speech, but that does not allow anyone to make derogatory comments. This cannot be any political narrative or political discourse. We are ashamed,” she said
