On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Balagarh Bijoy Krishna Mahavidyalaya organised a special programme at the Amrit Mahotsav Museum, dedicated to preserving the regional history of Balagarh.
During the event, Bidhan Chandra Sarkar, the sole recipient of the President’s Award for teaching from Balagarh in 2001, was felicitated in recognition of his outstanding contributions to education.

Mr Sarkar had established a primary school in Rajbangshipa village, known locally for its boat craftsmen. His initiative provided educational opportunities to children from economically disadvantaged families in the area. He also served as the administrator of two century-old libraries in Balagarh, further enriching the region’s educational landscape.
Over the years, Mr Sarkar was honoured by several prominent leaders of the Indian National Congress, including Prafulla Chandra Sen, Bhupati Majumdar, and Shankari Prasad Mukherjee.
Now aged 85, Mr Sarkar remains actively involved in local social service and cultural activities, often travelling to various events on his bicycle.
As part of the programme, the award documents and photographs of Bidhan Chandra Sarkar were formally preserved and displayed in the museum. The collection was inaugurated by Mr Sarkar himself.
Mr Sarkar said: “Partha Chatterjee, the NSS officer of Balagarh Bijoy Krishna Mahavidyalaya, has established two museums to preserve the history of Balagarh. Today, my award and photographs have been respectfully displayed in the college museum. As long as this historic institution exists, these memories will remain fresh for history enthusiasts. I could not hold back my tears at the great honour bestowed upon me by the National Service Scheme.”
