Local people of Mahananda colony in Malda demonstrated in front of the office of a mobile phone company against the installation of an optical fibre and 5G mobile tower.

The locals said they feared that the tower will have a negative effect on their health, while they tried to stop workers from going ahead with the installation. Police reached the spot and took control of the situation, sources said.

According to the local people, the area is densely populated and they cannot allow any high frequency tower in the place.

“If such equipment is installed here, the trees would cease to exist and women would be sterile,” a local said.

Officials, engineers and land owners had to face the wrath of the local people.

“The locals were on the verge of thrashing these officials, but the police stopped them from doing so,” a local source said.

Biswanath Kundu, the landowner, said, “The mobile company took my land on lease for 10 years to set up their office, but there was no such agreement regarding the mobile tower installation.”

According to the police, the mobile company has been granted all the required permission by the concerned departments.
