The 9th Kolkata International Poultry Fair began in the city today at Science City.

The fair which will continue till 11 February, has been organized jointly by the West Bengal Animal Resources Development department and West Bengal Poultry Federation.

In addition to 40,000 poultry farmers coming from various districts in West Bengal, their counterparts in other states and foreign countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Myanmar took part in the fair.

Swapan Debnath, West Bengal ARD minister, Swami Kaleshananda, controller of examinations of Belur Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University, Madan Mohan Maity, general secretary of West Bengal Poultry Federation were present at the function.

Mr Debnath said chief minister Mamata Banerjee has been trying hard to increase the production of eggs in the poultries in West Bengal to reduce its dependence on other states.

The ARD department is providing every assistance to the poultry owners and as a result, the production has gone up. He said if this trend continued, West Bengal would be self-sufficient in egg production.
