A man was arrested from Barsoi at Katihar in Bihar in connection with the gruesome Netaji Nagar couple murder case. The arrested person has been identified as 38-year-old Md. Hamruj Alam, who was one of the key accused in the murder of Dilip Mukherjee and his wife Swapna Mukherjee.

The arrested man confessed to his crime during interrogation, police said.

Police have been looking for the miscreants involved in the murder and robbery case for the last six days. Officers from the homicide section of detective department of city police nabbed Alam after tracing his mobile phone location.

Police said Alam, who is a labourer by occupation, had worked in the Mukherjee house as a casual worker weeks ago when Mukherjees had engaged labourers to repair and paint their house.

“He ran away to Katihar immediately after committing the crime. He has worked as a labourer at the house of the deceased,” said Murlidhar Sharma,

Kolkata Police joint CP (crime) who visited the spot several times in the last week since the murder came to light on Tuesday morning. Police also said that some of the stolen articles and cash have been recovered from Alam’s house.

Sources said the sleuths will interrogate him to find out the identities of the other accomplices and who the mastermind was in the robbery and murder. Earlier, the officers had interrogated as many as 20 to 25 persons in connection with the incident and they have cut down the list of suspects to seven to eight persons after getting some crucial leads.

From the beginning, the cops were certain of the involvement of someone known to the couple in the murder. The investigators had also used 3D modelling technology to glean clues from the crime spot and they found many fingerprints there as well.
