After chief minister Mamata Banerjee left Raj Bhavan following a 15-minute meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, Congress and the Left parties joined forces to lambast her “double-faced” stand. While PCC chief Somen Mitra said the Prime Minister and the chief minister had a prior understanding, senior CPI-M leader Sujan Chakraborty felt that the chief minister ought to share with the people what she discussed with the Prime Minister.

Against the backdrop of nation-wide protests against CAA and NRC and its initiator, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s meeting the Prime Minister at Raj Bhavan exposes the lack of genuineness in her stance against the anti-people steps of the BJP government at the Centre, PCC chief Somen Mitra said today. We have realised her intent to create fissures in the Opposition unity when she announced her decision not to attend the Opposition conclave convened by Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi on 13 January, he added.

Actually, both the BJP and Trinamul Congress leaders had a prior understanding, Mitra said. The “setting” was already there and the chief minister and her party had tried to camouflage this “understanding” with a clutch of protests against CAA and NRC, he said. I sympathise with the dedicated activists of both Trinamul and BJP who are pitted against each other, the PCC chief said. It is regrettable that they will continue to oppose each other while their leaders laugh at their expense, he said.

We fail to understand why the chief minister met the Prime Minister seeking the state’s dues from the Centre sans files, leader of the Left Front Legislature Party, Mr Sujan Chakraborty, said. It is strange that the chief minister met the PM alone in the absence of some of the seniormost officers of the state like chief secretary and directror general of police who accompanies her even in district tours to inform her of the nitty gritty of situations, he said.
