A migrant labourer who had returned home from Assam barely a week ago was found lying dead in a pool of blood on the rooftop of his ancestral house in Khatra here late yesterday evening.
The police detected marks of injuries on his forehead and also on the back of his head, apparently caused by a blunt object. The youth was alone at his home as his parents were visiting relatives in a different town. Based on the complaint lodged by Tarulata Mudi, another relative of the deceased staying in Khatra, the police have started murder investigations.

Twentysix-year-old Sandip Mudi was a resident of Beerkham village in the Dahala Panchayat area of Khatra sub-division. The youth had left home to find a job as a labourer first in Maharashtra and then moved to Assam to work as a labourer for a pipeline laying job, family sources said.
Last evening, when the parents of the youth failed to establish contact with him over phone, they asked Tarulata and Joydev Mudi, her husband, to inquire why Sandip wasn’t attending the calls. On checking, they found the house locked from inside. The couple, failing to get any response, then climbed on to the roof with the help of a ladder and was shocked to see the youth lying dead there in a pool of blood.
According to the Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Khatra, Abhishek Yadav, “Sandip was murdered, based on the nature of his injuries. The motive, though, has not been ascertained yet.” The police have questioned some local residents to get clues and other details. The youth’s post mortem was conducted today, and the report is awaited.
