Mamata’s close aide and ex-central minister Mukul Roy passes away

Veteran politician and one of the early Congress leaders who joined Trinamul Congress Mukul Roy died of a massive heart attack in a private hospital yesterday night.

He is survived by his son Subhrangshu Roy. Roy was cremated at Halisahar crematorium in presence of Trinamul Congress leaders. Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamul Congress national general secretary went to the house of Mr Roy in Kanchrapara and took part in the procession from his residence to the burning ghat in Halishahar.

Trinamul Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee in her X handle wrote: “Shocked at the news of the death of Mukul Roy, veteran politician and my one time associate in the political movements. He was a central minister and had acceptance among the rank and file. He had left the Trinamul and again came back. His organisational capacity none can forget. I extend my condolences to his family members, friends and acquaintances. I will tell Subhrangshu not to lose mental strength, we are all beside you.”

Abhishek Banerjee in his X handle wrote: “The demise of Mukul Roy marks the end of an era in Bengal’s political history. A veteran leader with vast experience, his contributions helped shape an important phase of the state’s public and political journey. As a founding pillar of All India Trinamul Congress, he was instrumental in expanding and consolidating the organization during its formative years. His dedication to public life will be recalled with admiration.”

Roy was suffering from age related ailments for quite some time. He went into coma and was admitted to the hospital where he had a massive heart attack yesterday night to which he succumbed.

Roy was also a Union railway minister. He was one of the earliest leaders who joined Trinamul Congress from Congress.

His mortal remains were brought to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly where leaders of Trinamul Congress, including Abhishek Banerjee, Biman Bandyopadhyay (Speaker), Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, Nirmal Ghosh, Sujit Bose, Firhad Hakim among others placed floral wreaths as mark of respect.

His body was taken to Kanchrapara and from there to Halishahar crematorium. Abhishek Banerjee, Partha Bhowmick took part in the procession.

Roy was a close associate of Congress leader Somen Mitra. He joined Trinamul Congress and became an MLA in BJP ticket from Krishnagar North Assembly seat. He again returned to Trinamul but could not take part in party programmes due to ill health.
