A major step towards the establishment of a Medical College and Hospital in Kalimpong has been taken, with the district administration identifying a suitable land parcel for the proposed institution.

Speaking over the phone today, Kalimpong MLA and former Indian hockey captain Bharat Chhetri said that, in line with a proposal from Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, around 20 acres of land have been earmarked for the project from a larger 76-acre tract known as Seed Farm in Kalimpong district.

According to Mr Chhetri, the District Magistrate of Kalimpong submitted a report on the identified land to the Chief Secretary on Tuesday. He expressed optimism that the project would move forward expeditiously, stressing the urgent need for a medical college and hospital in the hill district to strengthen healthcare services for local residents.

“The people of Kalimpong have long felt the need for advanced healthcare facilities. A medical college and hospital would significantly improve access to medical services in the region,” Mr Chhetri said.

He further stated that once the state government gives its approval in principle, the district administration will prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and submit it to the government for further action. “We are keen to ensure that there is no unnecessary delay in the implementation of the project,” he added.

Apart from the proposed medical college, Mr Chhetri also outlined an ambitious vision for the development of sports infrastructure in the hills. Drawing upon his experience as an international sportsperson, he said plans are being explored for a modern multi-sports stadium equipped with both indoor and outdoor facilities.

He revealed that a separate cricket stadium is being considered at Gorubathan, while fresh initiatives are also being discussed to enhance football training and skill development opportunities for talented players from the hill region.

Mr Chhetri was in Darjeeling today to attend an administrative meeting convened by the Principal Secretary of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA). The meeting was attended by the District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, along with officials from various departments.

According to sources, discussions focused on the present status of development projects, existing challenges, administrative priorities and future proposals. A comprehensive report is reportedly being prepared by the GTA administration following the deliberations.

The Chief Minister has directed the GTA Principal Secretary to work closely with the region’s Member of Parliament and MLAs in formulating development plans aimed at ensuring that residents of the hills receive essential public services without discrimination.
