The Khangchendzonga Winter Tourism Festival 2025 commenced on Thursday at Pelling Ground in Gyalshing district, with the objective of promoting winter tourism while showcasing Sikkim’s rich cultural heritage, traditional values, and strong community spirit.
The festival is being organised by the Pelling Tourism Development Association (PTDA) with the support of the Gyalshing district administration and other local organisations.

The inaugural programme was graced by Bhim Hang Limboo, minister for buildings and housing and labour departments, government of Sikkim, who is also the chief patron of the festival. Interacting with participants and visitors, the minister appreciated the collective efforts aimed at promoting local culture, entrepreneurship, and tourism through the festival.

Keshav Pradhan, president of PTDA, presented an overview of the festival and highlighted the state government’s multidimensional approach towards tourism development under the leadership of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay). He underscored various initiatives undertaken to uplift the tourism sector, which have resulted in improved infrastructure, enhanced visitor facilities, and enriched tourism experiences across the state.
On the occasion, Amar Subba, popularly known as the ‘Marathon Man of Sikkim’, briefed the media about the upcoming Gratitude Run scheduled for 28 December, from Pelling to Yambung Chowri. He stated that the run, organised under the initiative of the Chief Minister, aims to promote fitness, gratitude towards society, unity among people, and awareness about the scenic and cultural significance of the region, while also encouraging eco-friendly practices and sustainable tourism.
The first day of the festival also witnessed the commencement of a Futsal Tournament, during which three matches were played. In the opening match, Rushour Pelling defeated PHCC by three goals. Sardung FC registered a convincing six-goal-to-one victory over Changey FC in the second match. The third match between Executive Member FC and Yangthang FC ended with Executive Member FC emerging victorious through a penalty shootout.
The cultural segment added colour to the programme with vibrant performances reflecting Sikkim’s ethnic diversity. Traditional dances of the Nepali, Bhutia, Lepcha, and Limboo communities captivated the audience, highlighting the cultural richness of the state.
