Darjeeling MP Raju Bista, following the Interim Budget tabled by Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman today said that the central government would introduce a new tourism policy, aimed at boosting domestic tourism, benefiting regions like Darjeeling Hills, Terai and Dooars region.

“The emphasis on branding, marketing, and long-term interest-free loans for states will encourage comprehensive development of iconic tourist centres. To address the lack of proper medical facilities in regions like Darjeeling and Kalimpong, the Centre will be transforming existing hospitals to Medical Colleges,” Darjeeling MP Raju Bista claimed.

Mr Bista also said, “Aligned with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a “Vikshit Bharat – Developed India by 2047”, this budget allocates a significant Capex outlay of Rs 11.11 lakh crore for the next year. This will expedite the development of infrastructure, roads, highways, railways, and airports, healthcare facilities, aligning with the government’s focus on outcomes and addressing societal inequalities. This will be greatly beneficial in the regions like Darjeeling Hills, Terai and Dooars which has been kept deliberately deprived by the state government.”

“Our government has constructed 3 crore new houses, under PM Awas Gramin scheme and will be constructing 2 crore more houses under PMAY-G scheme. This will ensure benefits for the people living in rural regions of Darjeeling Hills, Terai and Dooars as well,” adding, “In this coming year, national health scheme Ayushman Bharat cover extended to all ASHA, and Anganwadi workers, and helpers. This will benefit thousands of ASHA workers and helpers from our Darjeeling Hills, Terai and Dooars region.”

Notably, Darjeeling MP Raju Bista has expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Anganwadi workers in Darjeeling LS constituency to Union minister of women and child development Smriti Irani, for her positive response to request regarding continuation of old recruitment norms for promotion of ICDS and ASHA karmis.

When asked to comment, Mr Bista said: “I had highlighted the prolonged absence of panchayat elections in Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts, resulting in a freeze on Anganwadi appointments. Despite this, Anganwadi helpers and assistants recruited during this period have shown exemplary dedication over 17-18 years, gaining extensive experience in their roles.”
