A key person said to have spearheaded Wednesday night ‘s gang war at Amherst Street, in which two persons were injured after an exchange of fire between two rival groups, was arrested.

Police sources said that the key accused in the late night fracas at Amherst Street, identified as Md Danesh, who led an attack on his rival group headed by Sagir Ahmed and Yashir Mustafa alias China at Amherst Street was picked up from Narkeldanga area today.

An officer of the ARS (Anti Rowdy Section) section of Kolkata police said that Wednesday night’s shoot out and hacking incident was the fallout of a long-standing gang rivalry between the groups of Yashir and Danesh, the arrested accused, who the officer claimed had been locked in a turf war over control of the snatching and burglary activities that are rampant in the area.

Earlier on Wednesday night, the Rajabagan area under Amherst Street police station was rocked by violence after local miscreants in an apparent show of muscle flexing fought each other, leaving two badly injured after bullets flew and the two sides attacked each other with sharp weapons.
