Former minister Udayan Guha was arrested by the Coochbehar police from his residence at Kolkata’s Phoolbagan area on Wednesday. Police sources claim that Guha has been taken to the Phoolbagan police station following his arrest.
The former state Minister for the Department of North Bengal Development who faces multple allegations including extortion as well as post-poll violence will be subsequently taken to Dinhata in north Bengal.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Kunal Agarwal mentioned that he has been arrested in connection with Case No. 419/26 (under Sections 406, 409, and 420 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita registered at Dinhata Police Station, involving allegations of fraud related to ‘cut money’ under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana’ since 2016.
Who is Udayan Guha
Udayan Guha had earlier served as the Minister for North Bengal Development in the previous Mamata Banerjee-led state government. Furthermore, he was also invloved in managing the Trinamool Congress Party’S (TMC) organizational responsibilities in Cooch Behar.
However, in the recently held West Bengal assembly elections Guha suffered a massive defeat as BJP candidate Ajay Ray emerged victorious from the Dinhata constituency with a margin of 17,447 votes. Following the drubbing, Guha started residing in Kolkata’s Phulbagan area, and rarely appeared in public.
Cases against Udayan Guha
The police have registered multiple cases against Guha, including charges of fraud and intimidation. His name has also surfaced in connection with incidents of post-poll violence. Sources say that police have been actively searching for Guha since then.
What BJP claimed
Following the arrest, Ajay Ray, the BJP MLA from Dinhata, said, “There are multiple cases against Udayan Guha. I demand the strictest punishment.”
The MLA further noted that the charges against Guha range from the murder of BJP worker Ratan Barman to extortion (‘cut-money’) and fraud.
