Fire guts rice mill in Galsi

Panic spread in Galsi after a massive fire broke out at a rice mill, destroying property worth an estimated Rs 5-7 crore on Thursday. The blaze began around noon in the rice godown that quickly spread to other parts of the mill. Thick black smoke filled the sky as fire engulfed paddy, rice, bran, sacks and valuable machinery. The mill authorities claim that goods worth crores have been reduced to ashes.

Police rushed to the spot and informed the fire brigade immediately. Four fire tenders reached the spot and took nearly two hours to bring the blaze under control. Fire department officials suspect the fire started due to an electrical short circuit. Local residents echoed the same. “We suddenly saw black smoke across the sky and ran to the spot. There was a huge stock of paddy and rice inside. Everything has been burnt,” said local resident Tapas Karmakar. Galsi police station OC, Kripasindhu Ghosh and Galsi MLA Raju Patra also visited the site.
