The son of an 82-year-old man has lodged an FIR against the Election Commission of India (ECI), alleging abetment to suicide, 17 days after his father’s death.
The FIR, lodged just ahead of the visit of Trinamul Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, has created a stir in the area. Para police station in Purulia district has registered the FIR against unknown officials of the Election Commission of India.

Durjon Majhi (82), a resident of Anara Gram Panchayat, had been summoned for a hearing at the Para BDO office on 29 December. He reportedly took a toto to reach the hearing centre, but later his body was found beside the railway tracks.

On the day of the incident, his son and other family members had lodged a general diary at Para police station, terming the death unnatural. A formal FIR, however, was lodged only later.
Earlier, the Purulia district BJP had claimed that the elderly man died in a railway accident and described the incident as unfortunate.
Family members of Durjon Majhi alleged that he had been living in constant fear for several weeks, as he was unable to submit all the required documents for the hearing.
