The Murshidabad district Congress today announced agitations against the police and the ruling Trinamul Congress. What irked the Congress party here was police action implicating a Congress leader in the recent murder of a TMC leader, Sofiul Hasan, at Hariharpara area in Murshidabad district, sources said. Sofiul (44) hailing from Lalnagar village of Hariharpara was gunned down in broad daylight on 12 July at Pradipdanga area under Hariharpara police station limits.

Subsequently, the local police filed an FIR naming the Hariharpara block Congress president, Mr. Mir Alamgir Palash as the prime accused in the TMC leader’s murder case. According to the slain Trinamul Congress leader’s wife, Mrs. Ardosha Bibi, the murder was politically motivated. Mrs. Bibi is currently serving as the Pradhan of TMC-run Humaiypur Gram Panchayat under Har iharpara block.

The district Congress leaders here alleged that police action against the block Congress activists led by Mir Alamgir Palash was instigated by the TMC. Top leaders of Har iharpara block Congress were involved in the murder of Sofiul, alleged Mr. Ashoke Das, a TMC spokesman in Murshidabad district.

Mir Alamgir Palash has been named in the FIR in the TMC leader’s murder case for several reasons, said Mr. Jayanta Das, a district Congress spokesman. It was Palash who took out protest rally earlier against bias of the Hariharpara police and he exposed corruption of the TMC in 100 Days’ works under MGNREGS (Mahatma Gandhi Nat ional Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme), said Mr. Das.

He stated, “Under the direction of our leader, Mr. Adhir Chowdhury, we are going to launch protest demonstrations against the district police and the Trinamul Congress on Monday. We have tolerated TMC terror during the last Gram Panchayats and Lok Sabha elections but we cannot stand it any longer.”

Meanwhile, the TMC leaders apparently preferred to take the collision course with the Congress in Murshidabad district, the hometurf of the Congress parliamentary party leader, Mr. Adhir Chowdhury. Delegates of TMC MPs like Mr. Khalilur Rahaman from Jangipur, Mr. Abu Taher Khan from Murshidabad constituencies, who were accompanied by the transport minister, Mr. Subhendu Adhikari and the minister of state for labour, Mr. Jakir Hossain, visited the family of the slain party leader, Sofiul Hasan, yesterday. “We want justice”, said Mr. Jakir Hosssain.
