In a bizarre incident, the body of a 21-year-old man reportedly went missing from the state-run Suri Super Speciality Hospital before it could be formally handed over to his relatives. The hospital authorities have lodged an FIR, and police have begun an investigation. The incident has triggered a political uproar in Birbhum district.

According to hospital sources, the patient’s documents listed his father’s name as Bhalla Singh and his address as Pandaveswar in West Burdwan district. He was brought to the hospital by several individuals and admitted under Dr Anjan Bhadra after examination. However, he died within ten minutes of admission.

Shortly afterwards, it was alleged that some individuals took the body down in a lift. Confusion remains over who removed the body and whether they were indeed relatives of the deceased. Questions have also been raised about how security personnel failed to detect the incident. The family later found the bed on which he had been lying empty.

The deceased has been identified as Ajay Singh. While the doctor was attending to other patients and the formalities for handing over the body were underway, hospital staff discovered that the body was missing.

Acting superintendent Subrata Garai said an internal inquiry had been initiated and that appropriate action would be taken if any negligence was found. He confirmed that an FIR had been lodged at Suri Sadar police station and that security lapses were being thoroughly examined.
