Stanford University publishes a list every year recognising the top 2 per cent of scientists in the world for outstanding research and contribution in the field of medical science. This year, India’s and Bengal’s very own doctor and scientist Dr. Uday Chandra Ghoshal, has earned a place in that prestigious list.
Rising from a remote village in Bankura, Dr Ghoshal has achieved international recognition through his exceptional expertise and innovative approach to medicine. By opening new frontiers in the treatment of complex gas and gastrointestinal disorders, he has added a unique dimension to medical science. Currently based in Kolkata, he continues his mission to make advanced healthcare accessible to common people.

One of his most important innovations is the breath test, which measures the amount of hydrogen and methane gases present in a person’s breath. The principle behind this test is that when certain types of sugars or carbohydrates are not properly absorbed in the small intestine, they move into the large intestine where bacteria ferment them, producing hydrogen and methane. These gases then enter the bloodstream and are exhaled through the breath. This test thus helps detect microbial imbalances or carbohydrate malabsorption-related disorders in the digestive tract.
Dr. Ghoshal’s invention, “Ghoshal’s Breath Calc” (Patent No. 202111029055), not only measures the levels of hydrogen and methane but also calculates the area under the curve, making the results far more accurate. Another groundbreaking innovation of his, “Indigenous Radio-opaque Marker for assessment of colonic transit time” (Patent No. 201611031351), has provided doctors with a new method to assess the functionality and motility of the colon.
