45-year-old Assistant Sub-Inspector of Kolkata Police, Shahabuddin Biswas, was killed in a road accident late on Thursday while returning to his quarters after duty. Biswas, who was attached to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bhangar Division, lived at the Bodyguard Lines police quarters in Kolkata.
According to police and local sources, the accident occurred near Bairampur on the Basanti Highway when Biswas was riding his motorcycle back to the city. A truck approaching from behind allegedly rammed into his two-wheeler. Preliminary inquiry suggests that the truck may have lost control due to poor visibility caused by dense fog that had settled over the stretch at the time of the incident. The impact was so severe that the wheels of the truck reportedly ran over the ASI’s waist, killing him on the spot. Senior officers, including DC (Bhangar Division) Saikat Ghosh, rushed to the spot soon after receiving information. Police have since seized the truck involved in the accident.

However, the driver fled the scene immediately after the crash and remains absconding. A manhunt has been launched to trace him. The accident led to a temporary disruption of traffic on the Basanti Highway, with police halting vehicular movement for some time to clear the site and recover the body. Normal traffic was restored after the body was sent for post-mortem examination. Police have registered a case and initiated further investigation into the incident.
