An AIDS awareness programme was organised by NSS unit of Rajganj College in Jalpaiguri to commemorate Red Ribbon Day as symbol of solidarity in the fight against HIV at the college premises on Friday.
Officials, who were present to welcome the awareness campaign, spoke about the first case of AIDS in India which was reported in 1986 in Chennai and the National Aids Control Programme was begun. Pankaj Paul, District monitoring and Evaluation Officer, Jalpaiguri, Sanjoy Roy, District ICTC Supervisor from Jalpaiguri CMOH, Principal Dr Haraprasad Mishra and NSS Program Officer Dr Kusumita Mukherjee Debnath were also present on the occasion.
They clarified that any Aids-affected person could be easily impacted by Tuberculosis. They said that testing can be done only in ICTS centre. Early detection and starting ART treatment can increase the life span of the patient. But it is not totally curable.

The symptoms of AIDS may appear within 6 to 12 months. According to them, preventive measures like the usage of condom, usage of disposable syringes, proper screening of blood before transfusion and testing of pregnant women could greatly impact the management of the disease in India.
