Jamuria MLA Dr Bijon Mukherjee has urged the state government to provide a fire tender and ambulance near the industrial estate in Jamuria. Yesterday, after a blast in a sponge iron factory in Sheikhpur in the industrial estate in Ikra, four contract labourers have been injured, including the crane operator.

While contractor workers Babloo Mondal and Abhishek Singh are still admitted in a hospital in Raniganj, the others have been admitted at a super speciality hospital in Durgapur. Hospital sources said that the burn injury of the crane operator is serious and is undergoing treatment presently. The conditions of the two contract labourers admitted at Raniganj private hospital are stated to be stable.

The cause of the accident is still not clear. Both Jamuria police and the Inspector of Factories will investigate this industrial accident separately. Deep Banerjee, local BJP leader has urged to beef up the safety protocol for the labourers working in these sponge iron factories.

“Rescue operations gained strength after local MLA Dr Bijan Mukherjee intervened. He called at several offices and arranged ambulances and fire tenders. These private factories should focus on maintenance work of the machineries,” he added.
