Aiming to improve punctuality in suburban section, Howrah Division of the Eastern Railway has adopted a micro planning process to provide faster commute in local trains.

Last month, the division achieved a perfect percentage in terms of punctuality in the suburban section. On 28 June, Howrah Division recorded 100 per cent punctuality in local train operations. The average punctuality of train operations in the division has also witnessed a significant improvement.

The perfect percentage of punctuality or even an 86 per cent has been achieved after a careful micro level planning by the divisional railway authorities. “The first step of the micro planning is the identification of routes where the trains are generally delayed and the reason behind it,” said an official ” As the Howrah Division is a junction station and platform clearance is a priority, we have deployed a very strict monitoring system for this. Whenever the platform is unclear for 40 minutes, we raise an alarm. This involves informing and alerting all the concerned departments asking reasons for platform being occupied for a longer period than required. We insist on clearing the platform at earliest and unless it is done, the situation is under monitored,” added the official.

As elaborated by the official, in the third step, the divisional railway follows a strong watch on minimising asset failures. “We try to make it a point that the asset failures are curbed as much as possible. If an asset failure occurs, we ensure that it is not repeated again.”

As pointed out by the official, the Vande Bharat sleeper that runs in the evening, was causing delay in running of three local trains.” To overcome the issue, we gave proper guidance to the controller, instructing him to control the train at a certain point and give priority to the three local trains. We are trying to improve the system further so that in the next three to four months the punctuality could be improved further,” said the official.
