Uttarakhand police arrested the son of a former chief secretary of the state for fraud and cheating by impersonating himself as a senior army officer or a higher official from the Union Home and Defence Ministries. Police recovered several Indian Army dress materials from the accused man whose father retired as Uttarakhand’s chief secretary nearly six years ago.
According to Dehradun police, the accused, Yashvardhan, son of the former Uttarakhand Chief Secretary, had been cheating people by posing as a senior officer of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Defence and the Indian Army.

Police arrested the accused following an investigation into a complaint filed by a woman from Delhi. They said the woman filed a complaint alleging that Yashvardhan duped her of ₹4.5 lakh by claiming to have high contacts in the government and sharing an influential profile with her. Police said the accused was demanding more money from the woman when she lodged a complaint. Following the complaint Dehradun police began an investigation and arrested Yashovardhan on Thursday after gathering sufficient evidence against him.
Dehradun City Superintendent of Police Pramod Kumar informed that during interrogation, the arrested man confided that he would change his identity as per circumstances to win the trust of his victims. Kumar said that at times, he would present himself as an IAS or IPS officer from the Ministry of Home Affairs. Sometimes he impersonated an officer associated with the Defence Ministry or a senior Indian Army officer.
The Dehradun Police also confirmed that Yashovardhan would stay at hotels deceptively without paying the bills. He had also been cheating hotel staff and security guards.
Interestingly, during the search, the police recovered an Army uniform, badges, a cap and a walkie-talkie from Yashovardhan’s possession. They emphasised that the preliminary investigation suggested the accused used these dress materials to impress the victims.
The Police further informed that a case was registered against the accused under relevant sections of the BNS and the investigation was intensified. Officials claimed that as the probe will progresses more victims may come forward with their complaints.
