Haryana man arrested for threatening to blow up Uttarakhand police stations after viral Instagram post

The accused, identified as Jaspreet Singh, was taken into custody on June 28.

A 26-year-old man from Haryana’s Ambala district has been arrested by the Dehradun Police for allegedly issuing a bomb threat against police stations across Uttarakhand through a social media post, officials said on Monday.

The accused, identified as Jaspreet Singh, was taken into custody on June 28 after an investigation linked him to an Instagram account that allegedly carried a post warning of explosions at all police stations in Uttarakhand on June 25, 2026. The message later circulated on other social media platforms, drawing the attention of law enforcement agencies.

According to police, a case was registered at Kotwali Nagar police station in Dehradun under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act after the post went viral. Investigators analysed digital evidence, including social media activity and electronic footprints, before tracing the account to Jaspreet Singh, who works for a private company and resides in Ambala.

Police said a raid was conducted at the accused’s residence, but he could not be located. His family members were informed about the case and asked to produce him before the authorities. Meanwhile, Jaspreet reportedly learned about the FIR and began travelling to Dehradun to seek legal advice. Acting on specific information, police intercepted and arrested him on Saharanpur Road before he could reach the city.

Officials said the mobile phone allegedly used to upload the threatening post has been seized and sent for forensic and digital examination as part of the ongoing investigation.

During questioning, the accused allegedly told investigators that he had uploaded the post in a fit of anger after watching videos on social media relating to a recent confrontation between local youths and Nihang Sikhs in Karnaprayag in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. He claimed he was upset over the subsequent police action against the Nihangs and reacted by posting the threat online.

The controversy stemmed from a clash in Karnaprayag earlier this month, following which police registered a case against members of the Nihang group. The action had triggered protests from several Sikh organisations. The dispute was later resolved after discussions between Nihang representatives and the Uttarakhand administration, facilitated following the intervention of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.

Police said the investigation is continuing, and the forensic analysis of the seized device is expected to provide further evidence regarding the origin and dissemination of the threatening message.
