The alleged death threat to BJP Kerala Legislative Party Leader BB Gopakumar evoked instant political reactions. The incident involves a threatening phone call made to the MLA, prompting BJP leadership to demand a high-level investigation
Kerala BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar demanded a comprehensive investigation into the death threats issued to Chathannoor MLA and BJP Legislative Party Leader BB Gopakumar, asserting that the incident is a direct challenge to democracy and cannot be trivialized.
In a post on X on Thursday, Chandrasekhar underscored that a death threat targeting an elected public representative is an assault on the democratic system and must be met with strict legal action rather than being downplayed. Even if someone with mental health issues made the threatening call as a front, the Kerala Police must look beyond the caller to identify the true masterminds who planned and instigated it, the BJP leader said in the post.

“Those who worked behind this threat and those who instigated or assisted it, must also be identified and brought before the law,” he added.
On July 9, an unidentified person called Gopakumar, verbally abused him, and threatened to kill him. The MLA filed a complaint regarding the incident with the Kollam City Police Commissioner. Days before the threat, Gopakumar pointed out in the Kerala Assembly that both the ruling LDF and the Opposition UDF shared an identical stance in supporting People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Naser Madani.
Following his speech, the state government unilaterally removed Gopakumar’s remarks from the official Assembly records. “This death threat came soon after,” Chandrasekhar wrote in the post.
