AICC General Secretary and MP K.C. Venugopal on Saturday demanded a Supreme Court-monitored probe into the alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ayodhya Ram Temple, alleging that the “real culprits” were being protected.

Addressing the media in Guruvayur, Kerala, Venugopal accused the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh of shielding the actual perpetrators.

He dismissed the Uttar Pradesh government’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the case as a “sham” and a “mere farce” designed to protect those at the highest levels.

“The SIT probe is merely an eyewash and a farce meant to protect those at the top while only arresting lower-level staff,” he said.

Alleging that the misappropriation of funds had taken place with the full knowledge of office-bearers of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, Venugopal said the Congress would continue to raise the issue across the country.

Stating that the BJP and the RSS were “not true believers”, the Congress leader alleged that they were interested only in “looting in the name of Hindus and dividing people for votes.”
