A proud moment for India’s indigenous canine heritage has finally arrived. The registration of Scooby and Putty is being celebrated as a landmark step towards preserving the rare Himalayan Gaddi Dog.

In a major milestone for indigenous breed conservation, two Himalayan Gaddi Dogs — Scooby and Putty — have been officially registered with the Indian National Kennel Club.

The registration marks a significant step toward the recognition and preservation of the Himalayan Gaddi Dog, one of India’s most ancient and distinctive native canine breeds found in the Western Himalayas.

The achievement has been credited to the sustained efforts of the faculty of Dr. G.C. Negi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (DGNC COVAS), CSK Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur.

Prof. Shivani Katoch was specifically acknowledged for her commitment and leadership in driving the initiative forward.

Appreciation was also expressed for Mr. Ritesh Chauhan, IAS, Secretary, Animal Husbandry, Government of Himachal Pradesh, whose support ensured that the conservation project received the necessary momentum.

Former Chief Secretary of Himachal Pradesh, Mr. Vineet Chaudhry, also expressed happiness over the decision. Talking to this correspondent, he said that the registration grants a “long-awaited recognition to Indian breed dogs” and will help in creating greater awareness about their importance.

He said that Himalayan Gaddi Dog is more than just a breed — it is an integral part of the cultural and pastoral heritage of the Western Himalayas. Mr Chaudhary stress that recognizing and protecting native breeds is vital for safeguarding India’s biodiversity and traditional livestock systems. Mr Chaudhry also said that this is a proud moment and we hope it marks the beginning of a larger movement to protect and promote India’s indigenous dog breeds.
