Two Assam Rifles personnel were killed while several others got injured in an ambush by suspected militants in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Monday, July 6.

The incident took place at around 1.30 p.m. in the Nungshang Khong area of the hill district. The suspected militants had fired at a convoy of the paramilitary force, PTI quoted a senior officer as saying.

“The two deceased include a warrant officer and a driver. They died on the spot. The incident occurred in Nungshang Khong area, located some 17 km from the district headquarters, under the Ukhrul Police Station limits, when the convoy was returning to the 40th Assam Rifles battalion headquarters at Sangshak,” the officer said.

The Manipur Governor has condoled the deaths and condemned the “dastardly act of violence.”

“The Governor of Manipur is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two brave Assam Rifles personnel in an ambush in Ukhrul today. The Governor strongly condemns this dastardly act of violence. Such attacks have no place in our society and cannot weaken our collective resolve to uphold peace and security,” read a post on the official X handle of the Office of Manipur Governor.

It added, “The Governor extends his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prays that they find strength and courage in this hour of grief. He prays for the strength, resilience, and speedy recovery of all those injured in the incident.”

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh also strongly condemned the “heinous and cowardly militant ambush”.

“My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. Their supreme sacrifice will never be forgotten. Such acts of terror will not be tolerated. The Government of Manipur is committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice and remains steadfast in upholding peace, security, and the rule of law,” he said.
