Six years after Sushant’s death, Rhea Chakraborty says the trauma never fully leaves, it just lives in your body

She was not asked if she was okay. She was asked if she had fully recovered from everything that happened in 2020. Rhea Chakraborty said trauma does not leave, it just moves from your mind into your body.

She did not say she was fine. She did not say she had moved on. What Rhea Chakraborty said was a lot more honest than either of those things.

Rhea appeared on Double Date, a chat show hosted by Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi. She was joined by her brother Shovik Chakraborty. The conversation turned to the events of 2020 and what has followed since.

When Neha asked Rhea whether she had fully recovered, her answer was direct. “It’s not something that you can truly get over. It’s trauma. It stays in your body, if not in your mind. As like Shovik was saying, there’s PTSD. You do your therapy and you deal with it,” she said.

She described healing as a continuing process rather than something with a fixed end point. She also acknowledged the specific difficulty of going through personal pain while being watched by millions. “Ours was public, so everyone knows about it, everyone talks about it, and that’s okay,” she added.

What Shovik said

Rhea’s brother Shovik also spoke during the episode. He described his life before 2020 as what he called “Chapter 1,” a period in which he was focused on academics and getting into a top business school. He said the years following Sushant Singh Rajput’s death completely derailed that version of his life.

Shovik said it took roughly four to five years to get through the worst of it. He also revealed that he continues to struggle with PTSD.

What happened in 2020

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput died on June 14, 2020. He was 34 years old. Rhea Chakraborty, who had been in a relationship with him, faced a wave of allegations from his family in the weeks that followed. The case drew intense national media coverage for several months.

In September 2020, Rhea Chakraborty was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau in connection with an alleged drug case linked to Sushant. She was granted bail by the Bombay High Court after spending approximately a month in custody. Her brother Shovik was also arrested and later released on bail.

Several central agencies including the CBI, ED, and NCB conducted investigations into Sushant’s death. The CBI, which took over the case from Mumbai Police, did not file a chargesheet. No agency concluded any criminal liability against Rhea in connection with his death.

Life since then

Rhea largely stayed out of the public eye for an extended period after 2020. She has gradually returned to public life in recent years, appearing in interviews and on social media.

She has spoken in previous interviews about rebuilding her sense of self after the period of public scrutiny and legal proceedings.
