‘Dil Chahta Hai’ came out in 2001. It changed how a generation of Hindi films thought about friendship, adulthood, and storytelling. A quarter century later, two of the people who made it happen are joining forces again.
Saif Ali Khan is ready to headline a new thriller for Excel Entertainment, the production banner run by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar. Variety India has reported the development.

Details are being kept close. The report describes it as an intense, edge-of-the-seat thriller that explores themes of morality, ethics, and complex societal issues.

The film is currently in the writing stage. No director has been attached yet. Casting for the female lead is still underway, though the report confirms Saif will star opposite a top actress.
Production is expected to begin by the end of 2026.
Saif Ali Khan and Farhan Akhtar go back a long way. Their personal and professional equation has remained strong since ‘Dil Chahta Hai’.
The reunion carries weight beyond just nostalgia. ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ was not just a successful film. It was a cultural reset for Hindi cinema. The film arrived at a time when mainstream Bollywood was still largely about melodrama and formula. The film threw all of that out and built something that felt completely new.
Bringing Saif back into the Excel fold for a thriller is a different kind of project entirely. But the foundation of trust between actor and producer is clearly still intact.
Saif has been consistently active. He recently appeared as a police officer in Netflix India’s ‘Kartavya’. He has two more films already lined up.
The first is ‘Haiwaan’, directed by Priyadarshan and co-starring Akshay Kumar. The second is a historical Netflix film about India’s First General Election, directed by Rahul Dholakia. The Excel thriller will come in addition to both of these.
