The decision regarding rebel Shiv Sean (UBT) and Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha members is expected before the Monsoon Session of Parliament scheduled next month. Sources say Speaker Om Birla has met and heard all sides and will now take advice from legal and constitutional experts.
The rebel TMC leaders have decided to merge with the little-known Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) while six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs formally joined the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde.

Sources say the decision on whether the breakaway factions get the recognition will be based on the opinion of the Union Law Ministry. The legal opinion will be sought so that the Speaker’s decision, if challenged in court, can withstand judicial scrutiny.
Birla has received petitions from Trinamool Congress seeking the disqualification of 20 rebel MPs who have broken away from the party. Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs also met the Speaker on Wednesday to request him not to grant recognition to the rebel faction of MPs—Sanjay Haribhau Jadhav, Bhausaheb Rajaram Wakchaure, Omprakash Bhupalsingh Nimbalkar, Sanjay Dina Patil, Sanjay Uttamrao Deshmukh and Nagesh Bapurao Patil Ashtikar.
The Speaker has already ruled on the DMK’s petition to sit separately from the INDIA bloc. In the case of the Trinamool and Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs, similar action is expected as also in the case of the seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs who had merged with the BJP.
