The wait for ‘Sardar 2’ now has an end date. Director P S Mithran announced on Wednesday that the spy thriller starring Karthi will release worldwide on September 10, 2026. The announcement was made on X and quickly picked up momentum among fans of the original film.

The official announcement

Mithran took to X to share the news himself. “Sky-shattering update. #Sardar2 in cinemas from Sep 10th, 2026, WORLDWIDE. Agent @Karthi_Offl arrives. Get ready for the mission of a lifetime. #OnceAspyAlwaysAspy #SardarFromSep10,” he wrote.

The post confirmed what fans had been waiting for since the film wrapped production. ‘Sardar 2’ is one of the more anticipated Tamil films of the year, given how well the original performed and the scale at which the sequel has been mounted.

Where it was shot

The production had been underway for some time. The unit completed 100 days of shooting in April 2025. By June 2025, filming had wrapped up in Bangkok.

Actress Malavika Mohanan, who is part of the cast, had shared a picture from the Bangkok set on her Instagram stories. She had also confirmed during a fan Q&A in May 2025 that she would be finishing her portions for Sardar 2 in June of that year.

Director Mithran had also spoken earlier about the status of post-production. He confirmed that dubbing was being carried out simultaneously with the remaining shoot. “Only another five to ten percent of the film is left. Yes, dubbing is also happening simultaneously,” he had said at the event held to launch the film’s prologue.

The story and the villain

Details about the plot have been trickling out for a while. When the sequel was announced, the makers released a promo showing Karthi’s character being dispatched as a spy to Cambodia. Mithran later clarified that the story begins in Cambodia before shifting to China.

A prologue released by the makers last year confirmed that actor S J Suryah plays the main antagonist. His character is named Black Dagger.

The technical team

Sardar 2 has a well-put-together technical crew. Cinematography is by George Williams and music is by Sam C S. Editing is handled by Ruben, with art direction by K Kadhir. Stunt choreography is by Dhilip Subbarayan. The story for the sequel has been written by M R Pon Parthipan, Roju Bipin Ragu, and Geevee.

The original Sardar released in 2021 and featured Karthi in a dual role. It was a commercial success and built a strong enough fanbase for the sequel to carry real anticipation into its September release.
