Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that service to people remains the truest measure of good governance as he became India’s longest continuously serving PM, crossing the 4,399-day mark in office.
The milestone places Modi ahead of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in terms of uninterrupted tenure after the country’s first general election. The achievement comes as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government completes 12 years at the Centre, with leaders across India and abroad joining in to congratulate the Prime Minister.

In a message posted on X, PM Modi said that only those who work with humility, dedication and a sense of duty are able to earn the trust of the people.
“Public service is the biggest test of good governance. Only a person who works continuously with humility, dedication and dutifulness earns public trust,” he said.
The Prime Minister also shared a Sanskrit verse emphasising devotion to public welfare and humility in leadership.
PM Modi surpasses Nehru’s uninterrupted tenure
According to official figures, PM Modi completed 4,399 consecutive days in office on Wednesday, overtaking Nehru’s record of 4,398 days served continuously after India’s first general election.
While former prime minister Indira Gandhi spent more than 14 years in office, her tenure was not uninterrupted. Narendra Modi’s period in office has remained continuous since he first took oath in May 2014, followed by successive victories in the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The NDA is scheduled to hold a meeting at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi to mark both the government’s 12-year journey and the Prime Minister’s latest milestone. Senior BJP leaders, NDA allies, chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from alliance-ruled states and Union Territories are expected to attend.
Leaders in India and abroad congratulate PM Modi
Congratulatory messages poured in from political leaders, diplomats and public figures following the achievement.
Former president Ram Nath Kovind described PM Modi’s tenure as a “watershed period” in post-Independence India and praised his efforts to project the country as the “mother of democracy” on the global stage.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the achievement reflected the trust and support of millions of Indians and termed the Prime Minister’s journey a “golden chapter” in the making of a stronger and self-reliant India.
International leaders also joined the celebrations. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim lauded Modi’s contribution to India’s growing global stature.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor congratulated the Prime Minister on the milestone, describing it as a testament to decades of public service and leadership.
Twelve years marked by major infrastructure projects
The Modi government’s tenure has coincided with several large-scale infrastructure and development projects across the country.
Among the projects highlighted during the NDA’s 12-year journey are the new Parliament building, the Central Vista redevelopment project, Kartavya Path, Vande Bharat trains, the Statue of Unity, indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, the Kashmir rail link, Noida International Airport, Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System and the Ganga Expressway.
The NDA is expected to adopt a resolution during Wednesday’s meeting, congratulating the Prime Minister for surpassing the record held by Nehru.
