The Delhi Police on Saturday granted permission to the Cockroach Janta Party to hold a protest at Jantar Mantar today, reversing the uncertainty that prevailed a day earlier when police sources had said no formal request had been received for the proposed demonstration.

An official communication issued by the Office of the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police-I, New Delhi District, shows that permission was granted to the organisation for a dharna and demonstration at Jantar Mantar from 10 am to 5 pm on June 6. The approval was issued as a “one-time exemption”, subject to prescribed terms and conditions.

The permission letter, dated June 6, was addressed to Abhijeet Dipke of the Cockroach Janta Party. It states that the request seeking permission for the protest was received by the police on the same day and was subsequently approved.

Permission granted for protest at Jantar Mantar

According to the letter, the demonstration has been allowed in view of an undertaking submitted by the organisers and in compliance with guidelines linked to Supreme Court directions governing protests at designated locations.

The communication specifies that the gathering can take place between 10 am and 5 pm at Jantar Mantar and will remain subject to conditions laid down by the authorities.

The approval was issued by the New Delhi District police administration.

Police had earlier said no request was received

The development comes a day after Delhi Police sources said no application seeking permission for the proposed protest had been received and that information about the event had surfaced largely through social media posts and online messages.

At the time, police officials had described the situation as “dynamic” and said assessments were being carried out at multiple levels while security arrangements were under review.

Sources had also indicated that senior officers would assess the evolving situation and take decisions based on intelligence inputs and ground-level developments.

With permission now formally granted, the protest has been allowed to proceed within the approved time window and under the conditions specified by the police.
