In yet another major setback for Mamata Banerjee-led TMC, senior leader Firhad Hakim on Friday, June 5, resigned as the Mayor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), citing that he was unable to work properly.
Hakim is a former state minister and one of the most prominent faces of Trinamool Congress in West Bengal. He has submitted his resignation amid continuing political churn within the party after its defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections.

“In accordance with the provisions of KMC Act 1980, I hereby tender my resignation from the Office of Mayor of the Kolkata, with immediate effect,” he wrote in his resignation letter to the Chairperson of Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

“It has been a distinct honour and privilege to serve the citizens of Kolkata in this capacity. I remain deeply grateful for the cooperation, support and dguidance extended to me by the Chairperson, the Members of Mayor in Council and all the Councillors during my tenure,” he added.
According to reports, the resignation was forwarded to the appropriate authorities.
Hakim, also an MLA, had been serving as the mayor of KMC since November 2018. Also, he was reportedly the first Muslim mayor of the city since Independence.
