Tom Holland, 29, is already thinking about what comes after him in the Spider-Man franchise. In a recent interview with Empire magazine, Holland said he wants to stay involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe even after his time as Peter Parker ends. His goal is to help whoever takes on the role next, whether that is a Miles Morales, a Spider-Gwen, or a Spider-Woman.
“For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter,” Holland told the magazine.

“But, if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset,” he added.
The reference is to Robert Downey Jr., who played Iron Man across multiple MCU films and helped introduce Holland’s Spider-Man to audiences in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Downey’s Tony Stark served as a mentor figure to Peter Parker throughout those early films. Holland is now expressing a desire to take on that same kind of role for whoever becomes the next Spider-Man.
His first time in the writers’ room
Holland’s involvement in the franchise has grown considerably with this fourth film. “This is the first time in my tenure as Spider-Man that I was kind of welcomed into the writers’ room,” Holland revealed to Empire, adding that he and the producers would “meet once every two weeks to pitch ideas and discuss our ambitions and what we wanted to try and do.”
He also revealed that one of his ideas helped kick off the conversation on what became a major plot point in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It was for Peter Parker to lose control, and he originally pitched the idea under the title “Spider-Puberty.”
“My pitch when I came to the table with it was called ‘Spider-Puberty.’ What happens if Peter Parker is losing control and things are changing?” he said.
The studio did not keep the name, but the core idea survived. Although the studio rejected the original tagline, Holland said the core idea was intact. It later developed into what we see in the movie. “But they liked the kernel of the idea and it grew into what we have in the movie now,” he said.
What ‘Brand New Day’ is about
After the record-breaking global success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks an entirely new chapter for Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Four years have passed since the events of No Way Home, and Peter is now an adult living entirely alone, having voluntarily erasure of himself from the lives and memories of those he loves.
The film is the eighth time Holland has played the character. The 29-year-old actor had hand in crafting plot of franchise’s latest film “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” his eighth time playing the superhero.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film is inspired by the famous story arc from the Marvel comics published in 2008, in which Peter Parker’s life is turned upside down and he has to start from scratch.
The cast and crew
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and produced by Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Rachel O’Connor, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.

Production wrapped in December
Filming on the movie was not without incident. On September 19, 2025, the production of the film halted after Tom Holland and a stunt double were hospitalised after a stunt went wrong, with the former being treated for a mild concussion.
Production resumed shortly after. On December 19, 2025, Destin Daniel Cretton announced that the film had wrapped production.
Filming took place partly in Scotland, where Holland met with young fans and filmed action sequences on his first day on set.
New suit, new trailer
Marvel fans got their first official look at Tom Holland’s new Spider-Man suit for Brand New Day when Holland stepped out in a redesigned costume featuring brighter red and blue colors and a larger spider symbol across the chest.
The reveal came one day after Holland teased the update on Instagram for National Spider-Man Day with the caption, “Something brand new is coming…” The next morning, the full look dropped with the message, “Are you ready? — 7.31.2026.”
The first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day dropped in March 2026, giving fans their first look at what to expect in the next chapter of the superhero’s adventures.
Holland’s biggest year yet
The film is ready to open on July 31, 2026. It is not Holland’s only major release that summer. Moviegoers will be get a double dose of Holland and Zendaya on the big screen in summer 2026, as the couple will also star together in Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey, which hits theaters July 18, 2026.
Holland’s Spider-Man first appeared in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, officially becoming part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony Pictures then released Spider-Man: Homecoming the following year with Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role of Iron Man.
Holland would later reprise his role in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).
