According to local officials, construction activity was underway at the bridge site when intense storm conditions struck the area shortly after midnight. The force of the weather reportedly weakened sections of the structure, leading to the collapse of major components of the under-construction bridge.
Workers and security personnel present at the site were caught beneath falling concrete slabs and twisted metal structures as parts of the bridge caved in.
Residents living nearby said the storm was unusually severe and was followed by loud crashing sounds from the construction zone. Several labourers are believed to have been trapped under heavy debris immediately after the collapse.
