Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Thursday said that the alleged release of video footage showing the killing of an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in Amritsar is a matter of grave concern and highly alarming.

“It is a wake-up call for Punjab,” Warring warned in a statement, while regretting that those responsible for maintaining law and order do not appear to be taking the matter seriously.

The Punjab Congress chief said it was extremely disturbing that terrorists had the audacity not only to kill a police officer on his way to duty, but also to record the incident and later release the footage in the public domain.

He further regretted that the Punjab Police was initially in denial mode and refused to acknowledge the incident as terror-related.

“Had the video footage not surfaced publicly, the police would never have admitted that it was a terror-related killing,” he observed.

Warring also referred to the earlier killing of two policemen in the Gurdaspur area, saying the incidents indicate that terrorists have gained the capability to target and kill police personnel at will.

The PCC president urged Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to treat the matter with utmost seriousness, warning that it poses a grave threat to peace and stability in Punjab.

“Punjab cannot afford another dark era of terrorism,” he cautioned, while appealing to both the state and central governments to nip the menace in the bud before it is too late.
