In East Burdwan, some infiltrators were detected and arrested by the police from Burdwan town, Galsi, Kalna and Katwa since 2024 and they were pushed back to Bangladesh in phases. Some agents operating in Budbud, Mankar and Asansol though were identified, but couldn’t be arrested as yet.
The Subhendu Adhikari government, after assuming the office has now stressed the need for setting up Holding Centres in each district as stop-gap detention shelters for the the identified immigrants. The East Burdwan district administration too has prioritised the task of finding either a suitable land or any government structure remaining unused.
The district administration already has assigned the district police to identify a suitable location for the proposed Centre. The Zilla Parishad authorities here, however hasn’t received any instruction from the state to help providing accommodation for the Centre.
Shyamaprasanna Lohar, Sabhadhipati, East Burdwan Zilla Parishad, said “We were yet to receive any such instructions about Holding Centre.”
He told The Statesman: “The ZP owns some unused structures, halls and Dak Bungalows of the British era in Khandaghosh, Katwa, Kalna and Guskara, which may well be modified and re-nominated for the purpose.”
