Kerala BJP chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar escalated the matter related to Munambam land dispute with Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday, May 26. He has asked for urgent redressal of residents’ concerns related to the registration of ‘highly contentious’ pieces of land on the UMEED portal.

In a letter to Rijiju, Chandrasekhar claimed that the Waqf Board registered 404 acres of land in Munambam on the portal and did not comply with the provisions of the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) framework as well as the applicable provisions of the Waqf Act.

“Today, I submitted a written request to Union Minister for Minority Affairs @KirenRijiju ji seeking the exercise of the Centre’s supervisory powers to remove properties that have been illegally uploaded on the UMEED portal. The Waqf Board registered 404 acres of Munambam land on the portal without complying with the provisions of the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) framework and the applicable provisions of the Waqf Act,” Chandrasekhar wrote on X.

Chandrasekhar has highlighted that the law authorises only the Mutawalli to upload Waqf property records to the UMEED portal.

“In this case, that authority rests with Farook College. Yet, without following due process, the Waqf Board unilaterally registered the property. These violations have been formally brought to the attention of the Government of India, and we expect appropriate action at the earliest. The people of Munambam deserve justice, and we will continue to pursue every legal and administrative avenue until it is delivered,” he added.

Chandrasekhar’s request comes after Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan’s assurance to people that residents affected by the Munamban land dispute will not be evicted from their homes.

The land dispute has become a major political issue in the state, with several residents voicing concerns over the ownership status of their land.
