A large-scale security operation unfolded across parts of Kashmir on Monday as the National Investigation Agency (NIA), backed by Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, carried out coordinated searches linked to an ongoing terror-related investigation. The raids, spread across Srinagar and Shopian districts, targeted locations suspected to have connections with extremist and separatist networks under the agency’s scanner.

Among the sites searched was the residence of former Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shahzada Aurangzeb in Shopian district, signalling an intensified focus on organisations and individuals previously accused by security agencies of involvement in anti-national activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

Security teams launched simultaneous searches at multiple locations early in the day as part of the NIA’s continuing investigation into alleged terror-linked networks operating in the Valley.

Another location searched was Jamia Siraj Ul Uloom in Imamsahib, an institution that had earlier come under the Centre’s scrutiny over alleged links to anti-national activities.

Officials have not yet publicly disclosed the exact nature of the investigation or clarified whether any arrests or detentions were made during the searches.

The operation was jointly executed by teams of the NIA, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and CRPF personnel, with security forces maintaining a strong presence in the affected areas throughout the searches.

The raids come amid continuing efforts by central agencies to dismantle networks allegedly involved in radicalisation, separatist mobilisation, and terror financing in the region.

Centre’s extended ban on Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu Kashmir

The latest action comes more than a year after the Central government extended the ban on ‘Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu Kashmir’ for another five years under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

The organisation, founded in 1941, has long remained under the scanner of security agencies, which have accused it of promoting separatist ideology, supporting anti-India propaganda and aiding activities linked to terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.

Announcing the continuation of the ban in February 2024, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said the decision reflected Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policy of “zero tolerance” towards terrorism and separatism.

The Centre had originally banned ‘Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu Kashmir’ in February 2019, months before the abrogation of Article 370 from the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.
