Assam Assembly passes UCC Bill, CM Sarma calls it ‘most secular, uniform and progressive law’
With the passage of the proposed legislation, Assam has now emerged as the third state, after Uttarakhand and Gujarat, to pass a Uniform Civil Code Bill.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday called upon Eid committees in the state to come forward and make the Eid-ul-Azha cow slaughter free.
In a social media post on X, CM Sarma hailed the Dhubri Town Eidgah Committee’s appeal to Muslims against cow slaughter to honour the sentiments of Hindus.

“Following the call by various committees, the Dhubri Town Eidgah Committee has also urged people to refrain from cow slaughter to honour the sentiments of Hindus and follow the law of the land,” Himanta said, adding, “I call upon all Eid committees to come forward and make this Eid cow slaughter free.”

Earlier today, he welcomed the initiatives of several Eidgah Committees, which have urged people to avoid cow slaughter on Eid.
Following the call by various committees, the Dhubri Town Eidgah Committee has also urged people to refrain from cow slaughter to honour the sentiments of Hindus and follow the law of the land.

“I welcome the initiatives of the Eidgah Committees in Hojai, Dhubri, Bongaigaon, Udharbond and other places. They have respected the sentiments of the majority community,” he said.
The Assam CM said that such voluntary actions will go a long way in strengthening communal harmony in Assam.
“I hope other Eidgah committees will also issue similar appeals,” he said.
Under the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, slaughter, sale and transport of cattle without valid permits are strictly prohibited in the state.
According to the Act, animal slaughter can only take place in certified slaughter houses.
