Amid the Election Commission’s nationwide push to strengthen the accuracy of electoral rolls ahead of upcoming electoral exercises, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on Saturday visited Uttarakhand’s border district of Uttarkashi to review polling infrastructure and assess the progress of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive in remote frontier areas.
The high-level visit focused on election preparedness, voter roll verification, and the operational challenges of conducting polls in difficult mountainous terrain near the international border.

Gyanesh Kumar arrived in Uttarkashi and was received at the Jhala helipad by senior administrative officials, including Uttarakhand Chief Electoral Officer Dr BVRC Purushottam and Additional District Magistrate Mukta Mishra. Officials welcomed the Chief Election Commissioner with a sapling during his arrival in the strategically significant border district.
CEC inspects polling booth in Harsil
During the visit, Gyanesh Kumar inspected a polling booth in Harsil and interacted in detail with Booth Level Officer Mintu Devi regarding the ongoing Special Intensive Revision process.
Officials said the Chief Election Commissioner reviewed various aspects linked to the mapping of SIR data, electoral roll verification and voter record management. He also sought updates on field-level implementation and the functioning of Booth Level Officers engaged in the revision exercise.
According to officials, Gyanesh Kumar appreciated Booth Level Officer Mintu Devi for her detailed understanding of the SIR process and her work in carrying out voter verification activities in the remote region.
The Chief Election Commissioner is also expected to hold a review meeting with election and district officials regarding the implementation of the SIR exercise and the preparedness of polling infrastructure in the region.
Election Commission expanding nationwide SIR drive
The visit follows the Election Commission of India’s announcement on May 14 regarding the phased rollout of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls across 16 states and three Union Territories.
The Commission has called the exercise a major nationwide initiative aimed at improving the credibility, transparency, and accuracy of voter lists by strengthening verification mechanisms and updating electoral records across the country.
