Vijay asks officials to improve infrastructure of Amma Canteens, ensure quality food

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday, May 18, asked officials to refurbish and improve the infrastructure of Amma Canteens across the state.

Vijay has further directed them to ensure delicious and quality food to the people.

According to PTI, Vijay held a review meeting with top officials after receiving feedback that the quality and taste of food offered in the Amma Canteens were not satisfactory.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has ordered to make all possible efforts to improve amenities, infrastructure, procurement of more cooking utensils/equipment and thereby ensuring quality and delicious food to the people, read an official release.

Notably, there are as many as 383 Amma Canteens under the Greater Chennai Corporation as well as 237 under the supervision of other local bodies in Tamil Nadu.

The concept of Amma Canteens was first introduced during the 2011-16 AIADMK regime. It is named after the then Chief Minister, late J Jayalalalithaa, who was fondly addressed as “Amma” (mother) by her supporters.

At Amma Canteens, people get food at highly subsidised rates.
